Frederik Schrader about “City Bops”

What started as a marketing experiment quickly turned into a full-blown creative adventure. While doing my fulltime job, I created a City Pop-style track using Suno AI for my company, MyHub Intranet Solutions. The result? An undeniable banger. That one track lit a spark. I knew instantly: I want more. And not just another song – I wanted an album.

Enter City Bops. The name is a playful blend of “City Pop” – the iconic Japanese genre that inspired it – and “bops,” those catchy, unforgettable tracks that just won’t leave your head. My own journey into City Pop began – like so many others – with Mariya Takeuchi’s Plastic Love, a decades-old song that became a viral phenomenon. But my fascination went far beyond the meme. I dove into dusty record stores during my trips to Japan, searching for rare finds and soaking in the genre’s melancholic magic.

With the power of AI (ChatGPT and Suno AI) the album came together in just one month. Ideas flowed like neon rain, and the AI amplified them into full arrangements in record time. But don’t be fooled: I went hands-on with every track. From lyrics to mixdowns, I reworked lines, cut verses, remixed versions, and pushed through countless iterations to make each song shine. AI gave me the tools –but the soul is mine.

City Bops dives headfirst into the world of City Pop: the loneliness behind the lights, the longing in routine, the echoes of unspoken love, the mood of Tokyo streets blurred by rain and neon. It’s all in there. But the songs aren’t just moody – they’re designed to stick with you. They bop.

The track Loop deserves a special mention. It nearly broke me lol. It’s the final song on the album and breaks with the rest in tone: brighter, more modern, a hint of Kylie Minogue. It took up 80% of my energy despite being just 10% of the runtime. But I’m proud of it.

While my previous album Waikiki Synth was built on nostalgic melodies and hand-played keyboard layers, City Bops embraces the AI era fully. That’s why it’s released under Vanterra Arts – not Fred Vanterra. This is a new chapter, a digital playground where ideas come to life faster than ever before. That said, my roots are still there. Waikiki City, a City Pop track on my last album, proved I could write and play in this style by hand. Now, I’m building on that legacy in a new way.

I’ve visited Japan six times already and Tokyo’s nighttime aesthetic – its endless contrast of beauty and isolation – has left a permanent mark on me. I carry it with me in everything I create. This album is no exception.

One final thought: Don’t get distracted by the fact that this is AI-generated. Listen closely. These are real ideas, real stories, real feelings. Discover them.

Thanks for reading, and make sure to check out City Bops on Spotify if you haven’t already!
